Interproximal Reduction (IPR)

Creating space for optimal tooth alignment

Procedure

What is Interproximal Reduction?

Interproximal Reduction (IPR), also known as tooth slenderizing or enamel reduction, is a common orthodontic procedure that removes small amounts of enamel from between the teeth to create space.

This technique allows us to align your teeth properly without the need for extractions. It's a safe, painless procedure that has been used in orthodontics for decades.

How IPR Works

📏 The Procedure

During IPR, your orthodontist uses a thin strip or disc to gently remove a small amount of enamel from between specific teeth. Here's what to expect:

  • Amount removed: Typically 0.2mm to 0.5mm per tooth surface - less than the thickness of a fingernail
  • No anesthesia needed: The procedure is painless because only the outer enamel is touched
  • Quick process: Takes only a few minutes per tooth
  • Immediate results: Space is created right away for tooth movement

🔬 Is IPR Safe?

Yes! IPR is a well-established, safe procedure in orthodontics:

  • The enamel on your teeth is typically 2-3mm thick - we remove only a fraction of this
  • Studies show no increased risk of cavities or sensitivity after IPR
  • The procedure has been used safely for over 50 years
  • Your enamel naturally varies in thickness, and the small reduction is insignificant

❓ Why is IPR Needed?

IPR may be recommended to:

  • Create space to straighten crowded teeth
  • Improve the fit of your aligners or braces
  • Achieve better contact between teeth after treatment
  • Reshape teeth for a more aesthetic result
  • Avoid the need for tooth extraction
Questions

Common Questions About IPR

No, IPR is painless. The outer layer of enamel has no nerve endings, so you won't feel any discomfort. You may feel some vibration or pressure, but it's not painful.

Most patients experience no increased sensitivity. The amount of enamel removed is very small and doesn't reach the sensitive inner layers of the tooth.

No. Research shows that teeth that have undergone IPR have no increased risk of cavities compared to untreated teeth. Proper oral hygiene is still important, of course!

Typically 0.2mm to 0.5mm per tooth surface, which is less than half a millimeter. Your enamel is normally 2-3mm thick, so this is a very small percentage of the total enamel.

Yes, the enamel removed does not grow back. However, the amount is so small that it has no negative impact on your teeth's health or appearance.
